MT. VERNON — Charles Wayne Hartwick,

72, of Mount Vernon, Ark., left this world to be with the Lord and rejoin his wife in Heaven on January 8, 2022. He was born in Conway, Ark., on August 1, 1949, to Connie Wayne Hartwick of Guy, Ark., and Susie Laura Dixon of Damascus, Ark.

He graduated from Oak Grove High School in North Little Rock, Ark., in 1968. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in May of 1969. He served one tour over in Vietnam from March 1970 to February 1971. He was stationed at Chu Lai Air Base as an ATC operator, serving with the 123rd Aviation Battalion, 23rd Infantry Division.

He had many jobs throughout his life, everything from being a short-order cook at a truck stop to driving combines harvesting crops. But for a good portion of his life, he worked as an auto mechanic. He loved pretty much anything with an engine and enjoyed working on them. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is preceeded in death by his wife, Dian; his parents; and two sisters, Martha Jane Hartwick and Brenda Nell Lister.

He leaves behind a daughter, Alethia Bannon (Payton) of Conway, Ark.; a sister, Barbara Hartwick, of North Little Rock, Ark.; sons, Gene Stanley Jr. (Marilee) of Pueblo West, Colo., and Bryan Stanley (Camille) of Mississippi; his grandchildren, Aaron Bannon and Kaitlyn Bannon of Conway, Ark., Kristen Moore (Jared) of Seattle, Wash., Hannah Stanley of Texas, and Jasen and Brianna Stanley of California. He also leaves behind four nephews, one niece, and many cousins.

After the death of his wife, he moved from Vilonia, Ark., to the small town of Mt. Vernon, Ark. in 2006. He met many wonderful people and became very good friends with a few. He worked in Rose Bud and became a fixture in the small town, often gathering with his buddies at the local restaurant to have deep discussions about anything and everything. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

A special thank you to Jim, Gary, Chris, and Roy for watching out for Chuck. He considered you all his brothers and loved you all dearly.

A memorial service will be held at the Arkansas State Veteran’s Cemetery in North Little Rock, Ark., at 12 noon on January 21, 2022.
