Clarendon, 1908: Fourteen passengers, described in the press accounts as “prominent young people,” were taking a pleasure ride on a gasoline-powered launch on the White River. The engine exploded, with a fireball catching the canvas top on the craft ablaze. Seven young people died while the rest were rescued.
