BOBBY M. POWELL

passed away on March 17, 2023. He was born on October 20, 1937, in Newport, Ark., to Marion Powell and Louise Owens Powell. When a preschooler, his family moved to Rochester, Mich.

He attended Rochester schools, enjoyed participating in sports and graduated from Rochester High School. Following graduation, he joined the Air Force and served in several places, including Turkey. When discharged, he entered Arkansas State, where he received his BSE and MSE degrees. After graduation, he moved to Newport (near his Owens family) and taught in the Newport schools. In 1969, he married Margaret Cox. They lived in Newport then moved to the Little Rock area where they both became educators in the Pulaski County Schools. He was a counselor at Fuller Junior High then the assistant principal at Sylvan Hills High School. He became the opening principal at Northwood Jr. High, from which he retired.

Bob was an active member of Sylvan Hills Church of Christ for more than 40 years. Bob loved the Razorbacks, playing cards, reading, crossword puzzles, and being in the yard. His favorite recent pastime was to sit in the yard with Curt, John, and Tony. He loved the Lord and being with his family. He felt blessed to have Margaret, Allison, Robert, and five grandsons. He will be remembered for being generous with what he had. Allison and Robert will remember his question, “Do you have any pocket money?” He continued regularly gifting “pocket money” to his grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Max Powell and Thomas Powell. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret. He leaves his daughter, Allison Elko (Pat); his son, Robert Powell (Nicole); and his grandsons, Judah Powell, Jacob Elko, Reece Powell, Luke Elko, and Sloan Powell. He also leaves his in-laws, Nancy Powell of Michigan, Janette and Robert Crow and Lavonne Cox of Jonesboro, as well as several special nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be at Sylvan Hills Church of Christ, 117 W. Maryland Avenue, Sherwood, Ark., on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., and the memorial service immediately following at 10:30 a.m. The burial will be at 3:30 p.m., at Oakridge Cemetery near Bono/ Jonesboro.
