PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 6-5, UAPB 5-2

The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-15, 1-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) nearly overcame three errors to win the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Prairie View A&M (8-16, 6-0), then was outhit 12-4 in the second game as the Golden Lions were swept at Tankersley Field in Prairie View, Texas.

After an error by UAPB catcher Brad Mican led to a run and Michael Burroughs’ sacrifice fly in the third inning gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the first game, the Golden Lions rallied to take the lead. Edwin DeLaCruz hit a two-run double down the left-field line in the fifth inning to tie the game, then Aiden Martinez and Ben Van-Maanan were hit by pitches with the bases loaded in the sixth and Lawrence Noble added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. Prairie View A&M used two sacrifice flies and an error by UAPB shortstop Isaiah Cohens in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5, then scored the winning run in the eighth inning on a balk by reliever Andre Greene (1-4), who took the loss.

An error by Prairie View third baseman Sebastian Coria allowed Carlos Velez to score in the fourth inning of the second game, giving UAPB a brief 1-0 lead. The Panthers made up for the error in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI singles from Andre Jackson and Derrek Lathon to take a 2-1 lead. Garrison Weiss scored in the seventh inning when Michael Burroughs reached on a UAPB error. Burroughs scored later in the inning on an RBI single from Andre Martinez for a 5-1 lead. JaKobi Jackson hit an RBI single for the Golden Lions in the eighth inning.
